I'm... not sure how I felt about Up in the Air.  I definitely liked it, but not as much as Thank You for Smoking or Juno.  The three principal actors did a fantastic job, and the character of Bingham is really interesting, with his obsession with airline and hotel status and his desire to disconnect from others is some pretty amazing parody / social commentary, but I was a little thrown off by the ending.  The ending was *good* but I don't know if I *liked* it.  It didn't ruin the movie for me, but it didn't exactly come full circle and leave me satisfied the way a terrific movie ending does.  For comparison's sake, all of my top five (other than Gommorah, which is a special case if there ever was one) had fantastic endings.

I loved Up in the Air, but I have to agree about the ending. I think that there was a shift in focus at the end that wasn't quite executed as intended. But I thought Clooney did an amazing job.

I'm not going to completely hate on Avatar but it is definitely not as good as everyone seems to think.

I've seen Avatar and Thirst since my last post, and Inglourious Basterds is right up next in my Netflix queue.  Keeping in mind that I haven't seen that yet, here are my top five of the year, with 5/4/3/2/1 word synopses:

5.  Avatar - Huge, bold, better than expected

4.  The Hangover - But why the chicken?

3.  Gomorrah - Italian like gangbusters

2.  Up - The colors!

1.  The Hurt Locker - *stunned*
Hey, remember this list?  Well, I finally saw Inglourious Basterds, and now it's pretty much one of my favorite movies of all time.  It moves up to 2nd on my 2009 movies list, and Avatar's bumped off.
